House shifting checklist for Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Two weeks before

• Get two or three quotes from movers. Ask what is included: packing material, labour, loading, transport and unloading.
• Agree the price, date and truck size by message.
• Sort out things you no longer need.

The week before

• Pack room by room and label boxes.
• Photograph expensive items, such as the TV, fridge and furniture, before packing.
• Arrange electricity, gas and internet at the new address.
• Keep documents, jewellery and valuables with you, not in the truck.

Moving day and after

• Check every room and cupboard before the truck leaves.
• Check items on arrival, before the movers leave, and pay after unloading.
• Update your address with your bank and other services, and on documents where needed.

Choosing movers

• Ask whether they provide packing material and trained packers, or only transport and labour.
• Ask how they handle fragile items, and what happens if something is damaged.
• Get the agreed price, date, timing and truck size in writing, and ask whether any extra charges could apply, such as for stairs or a long carry.
• Find movers and packers on Haaniam, or send a free request.

Packing tips

• Start with things you rarely use, and pack daily items last.
• Use a simple label on each box: the room and a short list of contents. Mark fragile boxes clearly.
• Pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in large boxes.
• Wrap glassware and crockery individually, and fill gaps so nothing moves.
• Keep screws and fittings from dismantled furniture in a labelled bag taped to the furniture.

Appliances need extra care

• Empty and defrost the fridge a day before moving, and keep it upright in the truck.
• Drain the washing machine and secure its drum as the manual advises.
• Have ACs removed and refitted by a technician, so the gas and pipes are handled properly.
• Gas appliances, such as heaters and geysers, should be disconnected and reconnected by a qualified person.

An essentials box

Pack one box you keep with you: phone chargers, medicines, a change of clothes, basic tools, toilet paper, a kettle, cups and snacks, bedsheets and important documents. It makes the first night in the new home much easier.

Utilities and paperwork

• Photograph the electricity, gas and water meter readings at both homes on moving day.
• Arrange the final bills at the old address and new connections or transfers at the new one.
• If you're renting, agree the return of your advance with the landlord, and hand over keys against a written note.

Children and pets

Moving day is busy and doors stay open. Arrange for someone to look after young children and pets, or keep them in one quiet room. Set up their room first at the new home so they settle quickly.

Budgeting for the move

The mover's quote is usually the biggest cost, but budget for extras too: packing material if not included, fitting and removing ACs, reconnecting gas appliances, new curtains or fittings, cleaning at both homes, and a day or two of takeaway meals. Setting aside a small amount for surprises keeps moving day less stressful.

Your first day at the new home

• Check that doors and windows lock, and consider changing the locks.
• Find the main electricity switch, water valve and gas valve.
• Test the lights, fans, taps and geyser before the electrician or plumber you used last leaves the area.
• Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first, and the rest over the following days.
• Introduce yourself to neighbours. They can tell you about local shops, water supply and services.

Moving within a building or across cities

For a move to another floor or a building without a lift, tell the movers in advance so they bring enough people. For a move to another city, ask whether the truck will travel directly or share space with other customers' goods, how long delivery will take, and how you can track it. Insure valuable items if the mover or an insurer offers cover, and make a list of every box before loading.

Office moves

If you are moving an office, plan the move outside working hours where possible. Back up computers, label cables and equipment by desk, and arrange the internet connection at the new address well before moving day, as installation can take time.
