Passport renewal in Pakistan: online, app or office

Option 1: Renew online

DGI&P's e-Services portal, onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk, accepts renewal applications from people living in Pakistan. Other services on the portal, such as lost or damaged passport reprints, are for overseas Pakistanis only.

Before you start, have these ready:

• Your supporting documents
• A photograph (up to 5 MB) taken as explained in the portal's photo tutorial
• The fingerprint form, or use fingerprint verification in the NADRA PakID app
• A way to pay: Visa or Mastercard. The portal also lists e-Sahulat and JazzCash for applicants inside Pakistan

The main steps are: register an account, create your application, pay the fee, enter your details and addresses, upload your photo and documents, add your fingerprints, then review and submit.

For applicants in Pakistan, the renewed passport is delivered to the passport office you choose. Home delivery is currently for overseas Pakistanis only.

Option 2: Renew in the PakID app

DGI&P and NADRA have added passport renewal to the NADRA PakID mobile app, including fingerprint verification with your phone's camera. This saves scanning a fingerprint form.

Option 3: Visit a passport office

You can also apply in person. All passport offices listed by DGI&P across Pakistan, including AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, are below with their official addresses. Use the filters to find your nearest office. Some, such as the Regional Passport Office in G-10/4 Islamabad and Garden Town Lahore, are listed as open day and night.

Before you pay

DGI&P has a no-refund policy for online applications, so check your details carefully before submitting. Fees depend on the passport type and processing speed. See the current fee on the official portal rather than relying on third-party websites.

Which option suits you?

All three routes lead to the same passport, so choose the one that fits your situation:

• Online suits people who are comfortable uploading documents and paying by card, and who want to avoid queues. You still collect the passport from the office you choose.
• The PakID app suits people who want to do everything on their phone, including fingerprints, without printing or scanning a form.
• A passport office suits first-time applicants, people whose details have changed, or anyone who would rather have staff check their documents in person.

Preparing your documents

Most delays come from missing or mismatched paperwork. Before you apply:

• Make sure the name, date of birth and parents' names on your CNIC match your current passport. If they don't, sort out the difference first, because the passport is issued from your NADRA record.
• Check that your CNIC is valid. If it has expired, renew it with NADRA before applying for your passport.
• If your details have changed, for example after marriage, read the portal's document list for your case, or ask at the passport office which supporting documents they need.
• For an online photo, follow the portal's photo tutorial exactly: plain background, face fully visible and no filters. Rejected photos are a common reason for delay.

At the passport office

If you apply in person, arrive early and take your original CNIC and your current passport. Offices handle a large number of applicants, so expect to wait. Your photograph and fingerprints are taken at the office, and your details are entered and checked with you.

Read the printed data carefully before you confirm it. Spelling mistakes are much easier to fix before the passport is printed than after. Keep your receipt or token safe, as you need it to track and collect the passport.

Tracking and collecting your passport

You can track progress on the DGI&P website using the details on your receipt. When the passport is ready, collect it from the office you chose, taking your receipt and original CNIC. Check the printed passport before you leave the counter, and report any error straight away.

Avoid agents and look-alike websites

• Apply only through onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk, the PakID app or a DGI&P passport office. Look-alike websites may charge extra or misuse your data.
• Nobody can guarantee faster processing in return for an extra payment outside the official fee.
• Never share your account password, card PIN or one-time codes with anyone who offers to "help" with your application.
