• Book directly with the official test partner, not through unknown agents.

Choosing the right test

• IELTS Academic is usually for university admission and some professional registration.
• IELTS General Training is usually for work, training programmes and some migration routes.
• IELTS for UKVI is a version used for certain UK visa applications.

Choosing the wrong test can mean paying again, so confirm with your university, employer or visa authority before you book.

Paper or computer

IELTS is offered on paper and on computer at many centres. The content and scoring are the same; the difference is how you take the Listening, Reading and Writing sections. Choose the format you are most comfortable with. Check the official test partner's website for available dates and when results are released for each format.

On test day

• Take the same identity document you used to book. Centres check it carefully.
• Arrive early. Late arrivals may not be allowed in.
• Personal items such as phones and watches are kept outside the test room. Follow the centre's instructions.
• The Speaking test may be on the same day or a different day. Check your booking confirmation.

Preparing well

• Practise with official IELTS preparation material from the test partners.
• Time yourself on full practice tests, as time pressure catches many candidates.
• For Writing and Speaking, get feedback from a qualified teacher if you can.

Watch out for scams

No legitimate centre can sell a guaranteed band score or a certificate without the test. Results can be verified by the institutions that receive them, so fake certificates are quickly found out and can lead to visa refusals. Book, pay and receive results only through the official test partner.

• Check how recent your result must be. Many institutions accept results only within a set period.
• Make sure your name on the booking matches your identity document exactly.

Understanding your result

IELTS results give a band score for each of the four sections, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and an overall band. If you are not happy with a result, the official test partners offer a re-mark service, and you can also book the test again. Check the partner's website for the current options and fees, and discuss with a teacher whether a re-mark or more preparation is the better choice.

Sending results to institutions

Universities and authorities often verify results directly with the test partner. Follow the partner's instructions for sending your result, and keep your own copy of the Test Report Form safe.

How the test is structured

IELTS has four parts. Listening and Reading test how well you understand spoken and written English, Writing asks you to complete two written tasks, and Speaking is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner. The Reading and Writing tasks differ between Academic and General Training, while Listening and Speaking are the same for both. Balancing preparation with study or work

Set a test date that gives you enough time to prepare, usually several weeks of regular practice. Short daily practice, such as reading an English article and listening to English news, often helps more than occasional long sessions.
